Two weeks after the National Championship and the orange and blue is beginning to fade. 15 days ago, the University of Florida Gators football team took home their second BCS National Championship and launched UF into the center of the collegiate sports universe. The immense surge of school spirit that took hold of Gainesville, Florida following the championship still hangs in the air but now seems to be slowly trickling back to normal. "Two days after we won, I bought a National Championship shirt," said Kelly Griffin, a University of Florida finance student, "The thrill of winning seemed to be effecting everyone in the city." Many stores such as T.I.S. or Florida Bookstores on University Ave. found themselves running out of select sizes of various t-shirt styles. Tents selling assorted commemorative memorabilia began sprouting up in various locations throughout Gainesville, including along 13th Street and Archer Road. "I had to go to three different stores before I could find a shirt that I wanted," said Merritt Montanye, a Marketing student at UF. Yet, despite this initial obsession with the Gators, the tents have come down and the lines at the bookstore have returned to a normal length. The sight on campus has changed as well, transforming from a raging sea of school colors to sporadic flecks scattered throughout the crowd. However, despite this gradual swing back to normalcy in Gainesville, many students, such as Tyler Rockey, 22, still feel an outstanding passion for the Orange and Blue. "The pride I feel for my school and the Gators is indescribable," said Rockey, "I'd wear my Championship shirt everyday if I could." |
