Alachua City Staff To Be Commended

Gib Coerper

To the Editors:

I think it is important for the members of this community to realize how well your City staff responded to the City Hall fire last month. Within a week of this potentially devastating conflagration, the functions and services of the City were back to 100 percent, with nothing lacking as to quality and thoroughness.

We should be very grateful for City Manager Watson and his entire team for the positive, productive and tireless efforts expended to keep the City running after the fire. Not only was the transition virtually seamless, but no vital service was interrupted or curtailed during the time it took to erect our temporary quarters.

Not every organization would have had the plan, the ability or the drive to recover so quickly or so completely. If it had not been in the news, many in the community would have been totally unaware of the fire, because the administration did not allow the situation to affect the City at all. This is a stunning achievement and one that should be known and applauded.

Needless to say, the entire City and the Commission should be proud of the quality and effectiveness of the entire Administration team. Mr. Watson has chosen well; trained thoroughly and planned more than effectively. The community is well-served by its employees, and will continue to enjoy the finest services and infrastructure in the State, thanks to their combined efforts.

We thank them for turning a potential disaster into a positive example of what can be accomplished with excellent leadership and excellent staff. The City weathered this storm unscathed due to the foresight and the quality of leadership and personnel that we are blessed with.

Gib Coerper
Vice-Mayor
City of Alachua
