Jean Calderwood

On behalf of the City of Alachua, we extend the hand of goodwill as we enjoy the Holiday Season and reflect on the many blessings we share throughout the year. We invite everyone to the Christmas Tree Lighting and Caroling on December 1st at 6PM and Annual Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 9th at 2:00PM, all in the beautiful Historic Main Street District. If you are unable to attend these activities, then take a stroll any night in downtown beautiful Alachua and enjoy the magical ambiance of our dazzling decorations.

A big thanks goes to our dedicated citizen volunteers and business community for without them we would not be able to provide these and other activities enjoyed throughout the year in "The Good Life Community". We also reach out through the local schools, churches, civic groups and community center to provide to those less fortunate. Our corporate partners and individuals such as Michael Peterson, NFL Superstar and former Santa Fe HS Raider, generously provide food and toys each year. We also thank the loyal City of Alachua staff for their willingness to work nights and weekends to assist with our many community events. We are truly blessed.

The unfortunate closing of the Georgia-Pacific Sawmill in the neighboring community of Palatka sharpens our awareness of the importance of a diverse job market and reaffirms our belief in the City of Alachua that good, plentiful jobs are important to the well being of all citizens. We strongly believe that a basic fundamental right in our society is to be able to provide for one's family.

As we look back on the accomplishments and difficulties of 2006, our resolve is strengthened to make 2007 an even more successful year for our citizens. God Bless our family, friends, neighbors and those serving in the Armed Forces.

Jean Calderwood, Mayor
City of Alachua
